"Hey, looks like there's a town up ahead."
Reigen obviously saw it --- he was the one driving, so he saw just about everything. But Max wasn't sure that the others in the back had. She looked over the shoulder of her seat as she said it, making sure that her voice wasn't drowned out by the sound of the 80s citypop CD they acquired at the last town they ran into.
Max turned back around and squinted her eyes, trying her best to filter out the rays of blinding light that seemed to reflect off of everything.
"I think it might be near a beach, too," she said. "That looks like a seagull, right?" Max pointed at the figure of a bird flying overhead.

“Oh, it’s…doesn’t he look familiar, Mura?” The one with the dark hair smirked in recognition.
“…Oh! Oh, yeah.” The drunken one’s lips curled in scorn. “It’s you. The Father’s kid.” He reached out to plant his hand on Doppio’s head to jostle it roughly. “So you managed to crawl back onto land, huh? Good for you. Everyone wrote you off as good as shark food.”
“Stop,” Doppio winced, pulling his head free. His nose throbbed even more now from the rough treatment but that didn’t matter to him as much as getting Hitomi away from these jerks did.

"We're leaving now." Hitomi hooked her arm around Doppio's and attempted to lead him away.

Drip.
Blood. Staining the white fabric of Max’s shirt.
“What’s your name, bambola?” When Doppio looked up the one with dark hair was behind Hitomi, boxing her in. His blood began pounding in his ears. When had he gotten that close?
“Don’t touch her.” Doppio jerked but he was being held in place by the one that reeked of musty wine.
“Oh shut up.” The faux-friendly tone collapsed almost immediately into a frustrated growl. You of all people…you made it out of this dump to live it up with some girl like a morto di figa and for what? Do you even know what life has been like for the rest of us here, huh?? If Father ever had the sense to put you in your place you wouldn’t be looking so damn carefree.”
Doppio opened his mouth to snap back but the man’s thick arm closed around his wind pipe.

‘Who are you!?’
‘What did I do to you…!?’
The answers wouldn’t come. His head was pounding and his field of vision was narrowing to pin pricks. The urge to vomit rose in his throat but it wouldn’t make it pass the crushing force around his esophagus. The last thing he could make out was the man taking hold of Hitomi then—
██████
Doppio blinked. He was suddenly on his hands and knees several feet away. He gasped in a harsh lungful of air - there was nothing around his throat now to stop him. His vision slowly returned and the first thing he could see was a small pool of blood beneath his nose on the ground. He whipped his head up, and Hitomi was somehow the only one left standing among them. The two men were laid out and groaning on the ground. They sounded as flummoxed as they did pained. Still, Doppio barely spared them a thought.
“Hitomi!” Doppio shakily pushed to his feet. “Are you okay?”

"Come on!" Hitomi ran towards Doppio, clapping her hand around his wrist as she passed.

“H-H-Hiiii—!” Doppio panted as they reached the cliffside, his legs ready to disintegrate.

"Are you okay? What happened?"
no subject
“…Huh?” It took him too long to process Hitomi’s question.

So why did her question get his hackles up? It wasn’t an accusation but some part of him felt under attack.
“No,” Doppio swallowed. “I don’t remember…whatever that was.”

"We should go back," she said quickly, taking Doppio's hand in her own. She didn't run as she had before, but she was definitely walking at a quick clip.

Suddenly, he dug his heels in. “You go ahead.”

“They insulted Father, too.” They could despise him all they wanted, but Father Serra? There was no excuse.
